What Is a Window Sill?

A window sill is the ledge at the bottom of a window that projects further into the room than the other sides of the opening. It is different from the window recess, although a window can have both.

Overview

Inspect the window from the side. If the bottom edge extends further into the room than the top and sides, treat it as a projecting sill when planning your plantation shutters.

Window sill identification

The sill matters because the bottom of the shutter frame may need to finish on top of it. As an example, a frame that overlaps the side and top edges of the opening can’t merely proceed down over a sill that projects forward.

Identify the sill before capturing your final dimensions so the correct bottom-frame arrangement can be allowed for.
