Outside Mount Measuring with a Decorative Architrave

Decorative architraves can have curved or stepped profiles, so the usable mounting surface may be smaller than the overall trim.

Why Decorative Architraves Are Different

A decorative architrave can include grooves, curves, raised details or stepped surfaces. If the outer edge doesn’t provide a clear flat face for the outside-mount frame, you can’t merely use the outermost edge as your measuring point.

If your decorative architrave does have a continuous flat outer edge suitable for the shutter frame, measure it in the same way as a standard architrave. The special method below is for decorative profiles where the outer edge isn’t a suitable flat mounting surface.

Step 1: Locate the Flat Mounting Surface

Find a continuous flat section of the decorative architrave that is greater than 38mm wide. This may be on the inner, middle or outer portion of the profile. This is the surface your outside-mount frame will sit against.

Use the same nominated mounting plane around the opening. Do not measure from a groove, rounded edge, decorative peak or sloping face.

Step 2: Take the Dimensions

  • Measure the width from the edge of the nominated flat surface to the corresponding edge on the opposite side. Take three dimensions.
  • Measure the height from the edge of the nominated flat surface to the corresponding edge on the opposite side. Take three dimensions.
  • Use the smallest width and smallest height.

Keep all dimensions on the same chosen flat plane. If the profile changes around the window, the available flat area isn’t greater than 38mm, or you are unsure which surface to use, send our trade team clear photos before releasing the order.
